CSEJATC Journeyman Upgrade Courses

The following is a sample list of courses available through the CSEJATC:

  1. Motor Control Level 1
    This class will include both lecture and hands on study approximately 50/50. The class is designed to offer a basic understanding of motor controls and how they apply in today's market. Many handouts and lab assignments of actual circuits will allow the journeyman to form an understanding of motor control circuits.
  2. Motor Control Level 2
    This class is a continuation of the basic course that is being offered with the emphasis on control wiring and troubleshooting motor control circuits with hands on lab assignments.
  3. HVAC Level 1
    This class is being offered to expand the understanding of HVAC systems with emphasis on the electrical components of modern systems. The purpose of this class is to provide the journeyman with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
  4. HVAC Level 2
    The purpose of this class is to provide the journeyman with a better understanding of troubleshooting refrigeration units.
  5. Transformers Level 1
    This is a series of classes on transformer training. One class builds on another. The goal is to cover the following:  Auto transformers, Single-phase transformers, Three-phase transformers, Buck-boost transformers, Isolation transformers, Transformer grounding per the NEC, Transformer grounding specifications of several local customers and Transformer over current protection. Classes will include both lecture and hands on study approximately 50/50.
  6. Transformers Level 2
    Transformer Connections two courses goal is to cover the following:  The National Electrical Code as it pertains to transformer overcurrent protection, tap rules, and grounding.
  7. Grounding Level 1
    Grounding is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the electrical industry. In an effort to bring clarity to the subject, the Colorado Springs Electrical JATC has collaborated with Colorado Springs Regional Building Department -Electrical Inspector, Terry Schneider. Terry has developed a course on accepted grounding techniques. This is a unique opportunity to get first-hand information on how the Regional Building Department expects electrical systems to be grounded.
  8. Fire Alarm Level 1
    This class will help familiarize the journeyman with different systems in today's market, also the many types of fire alarms. This class will also offer the journeyman a better understanding of the different components and wiring methods.
  9. Electrical Theory Level 1
    Ohms Law, AC circuits, DC circuits and a variety of load calculations will be covered in detail. This class is highly recommended as a prep class for transformer training.
  10. OSHA 10
    This class is a must for anyone working in the construction industry. OSHA rules and practices are covered in detail.
  11. CPR/First Aid
    The skills learned in this class are important for the well-rounded journeyman and good citizen.
  12. Blueprints and Specs
    The intent of this class is to clarify symbol identification; associate symbols with functions and interprets specifications as they relate to blueprints.
  13. Code Changes 2002 NEC
    This class is being offered to explain the significant changes in the 2002 National Electrical Code.
  14. COMET Training
    Construction Organizing —Membership –Education Training--Why should we organize? Why shouldn't we?  What are the effects of union market share on our bargaining power? Want to know the answers? Sign up for the class.
  15. Common Sense Economics
    This workshop is set up to present an alternative view of the economy from the workers perspective. To provide information and facts that will help challenge assumptions about the economy. Also connect economic issues to the unions goals around organizing, legislative and political action.
  16. Stewards Training
    Learn the roll and responsibilities of an IBEW steward representing local 113. Be the conduit within our brotherhood, learn how to:
    Communicate with the business manager
    • Work for the welfare of the electrical industry
    • Respond promptly and decisively to all issues
    • Act as a model of fairness
    • Demonstrate quality craftsmanship
